Role Summary

The Director of Software Engineering sets the long-term strategy and oversees the performance of the software engineering team that run Alaska's guest facing digital products. This role establishes strategic goals and direction for a team of multiple leaders and their engineering teams who are responsible for, our native mobile apps, the airport self-service experience and our commercial pricing and loyalty systems. The best candidates for this role will embrace servant leadership, love coaching and inspiring teams, and enjoy collaborating with product and design teams to build products that customers love. The role requires a forward-thinking leader who, by nature, loves technology and loves leading people and who will help us adapt and evolve as technology and customer needs constantly change.

Scope & Complexity

This position directs a large software engineering staff and is responsible for the technology strategy and approach they use to grow and sustain the guest-facing digital products for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. This director is accountable for numerous technology offerings that materially support the revenue and operating performance of Alaska Airlines.

Key Duties

  • Set and articulate the long-term technical vision and direction for Alaska's e-commerce systems

  • Establish talent management strategy for team of software engineering managers to create and sustain an inclusive environment that attracts and retains software engineers from diverse backgrounds and encourages cross-team collaboration and sharing of solutions

  • Develop people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on fostering strategic and systems thinking, development of talent, and succession planning across teams and disciplines

  • Nurture the team as a coach and mentor to help team members continuously grow by setting high standards and inspiring the team to achieve them.

  • Embrace and execute a lean development framework that promotes quickly turning product ideas into deliverables that can be measured and evaluated.

  • Cultivate strong partnerships with Product and Design counterparts to leverage skills and resources, achieve business and development goals, align and deliver on vision

  • Partner with teams to identify and leverage new technologies and best practices to create better business outcomes

  • Build solid working relationships with IT, Security, and Enterprise Architecture teams to ensure the team delivers secure, reliable and high performing products

Job-Specific Skills & Education


  • A minimum of 8 years contributing to software delivery teams with progressively increasing responsibilities.

  • A minimum of 5 years of hands-on software development experience.

  • A minimum of 5 years of management experience leading and mentoring software developers with a focus on delivering customer-facing, high-scale products.

  • Demonstrated organizational leadership and engineering management skills overseeing sizable teams where tight collaboration with design and product was critical to success

  • Deep experience in lean and XP practices that increase quality and accelerate product development.

  • A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree, with a focus in computer science or a related discipline.

  • An equivalent combination of training, experience, and education will be considered in lieu of required experience and/or degree.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
